The artist has handed over the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which works to preserve the Britain's independent live music spots.

He was presented with the award on October 16 as his latest record his work was chosen as the outstanding release of the past year.

He has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in acknowledgment of the vital role local spots played in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the region, and further afield, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These locations are renowned, but they are facing challenges."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, major artists like the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its efforts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their admission fees, which supports smaller concert halls.

He also participated, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to assist 38 grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money helped locations that were facing imminent closure due to challenges stemming from water damage, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Other venues received funding support in upgrading facilities and technical equipment that positively impacted performers and audiences.

"The idea that funds from shows in major spaces helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is among several artists to give his honor funds to charitable organizations.

When Pulp earned the prize in the year 1996 for their record Different Class, frontman Jarvis Cocker announced that the act would contribute their winnings to the non-profit War Child.

During 2002, musician the artist split her award among multiple organizations, such as the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I donated a grand to my local community centre, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they lacked new equipment," the artist shared with a publication.

In recent years, Ezra Collective gave their funds to the community center that nurtured their group, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients M People donated their award to a MS organization after a friend was found to have the condition.

"Receiving the award was quite enough," said vocalist the singer. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the extra, because we had the cake. So our victory touched the lives of others."

Recently, the trust shared it had protected several small stages in the South East, by transferring them to local control.

The first in the city and the second in the city were bought under the public acquisition scheme, which is supported by Arts Council England and supporters who buy "ownership units" in the properties.
